The 2003 recipient was Joel H. Beeghly of Carmeuse North America Services / Carmeuse Lime Co. His presentation was entitled "Recent Experiences with Lime — Fly Ash Stabilization of Pavement Subgrade Soils, Base, and Recycled Asphalt." It was delivered on October 21, 2003, in the Bulk 2 session.
The 2001 recipient was William E. Wolfe of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science at the Ohio State University. His presentation is entitled "The Behavior of Coal Combustion Products in Structural Fills - A Case History." It was delivered on October 22, 2001, in the Construction Products I Session.
The 1999 recipient was Xavier Querol of the Institute of Earth Sciences "Jaume Almera", CSIS, in Barcelona, Spain. His presentation was delivered on October 19, 1999, in the Chemistry and Mineralogy Session. It was entitled "Synthesis of Zeolites from Fly Ash in a Pilot Plant Scale Examples of Potential Environmental Applications".
The 1997 recipient was Michael D. A. Thomas of the Dept. of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. His presentation was entitled "The Use of Fly Ash in Concrete: a Question of Classification". It was delivered on October 20, 1997, at 10:15 a.m. in the session entitled "Concrete and Cement".
The 1995 recipient was Ronald Hamric of the Patriot Mining Company, Inc. His presentation was entitled "The Backhaul and Utilization of Coal Ash in Reclamation and AMD Mitigation by Patriot Mining Company, Inc." It was delivered on October 24, 1995, at 10:45 a.m. in the session entitled "Mine Reclamation/Backhauling".
The 2005 award was deemed to be a tie, so there are two recipients. They are:
The Barton A. Thomas Memorial Award honors the memory of Barton A. Thomas, an innovative and pioneering leader in the field of coal combustion by-product utilization. It is presented after the conference to the person whose oral presentation is chosen by a panel of judges to be the most outstanding of the conference. The award is made possible by Virginia Thomas and is sponsored by the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research.

The Barton A. Thomas Memorial Award was first presented after the 1995 International Ash Utilization Symposium to the person making the best presentation (oral or poster). It has been presented after each of the subsequent symposia in that series. Because the 2005 iteration of that symposia series is combined with other conferences into the World of Coal Ash, Mrs. Thomas has graciously agreed that WOCA will be the next venue for the competition.
The large number of poster and oral presentations in WOCA has made apparent a need for both an oral presentation award and a poster presentation award. Mrs. Thomas also graciously agreed that the Barton A. Thomas Memorial Award will be a competition among oral presentations only.
