Welcome to Kentucky, the Bluegrass state. It is home to horse aficionados and nature enthusiasts - the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland and some of the best state parks in the nation can be found within its borders. Lexington was founded in 1775 and by 1820 was one of the largest and wealthiest towns west of the Allegheny Mountains and was known as the Athens of the West.
It is within a day's drive of 75 percent of the country's population. It is strategically located at the intersection of interstates 64 and 75. Fayette County consists of 283 square miles of gently rolling plateau in the center of the inner Bluegrass region. The area is noted for its beauty, fertile soil, excellent pastureland and horse farms.
Many sightseeing opportunities are available in the Bluegrass area, which is best known for its horse breeding/racing industry and its bourbon distilleries. Persons coming to the Symposium may wish to take advantage of the many opportunities available to individuals.
